‘Night Terrors’ Augmented Reality Game May Actually Give You Night Terrors [Indiegogo]

I’m a huge fan of survival horror video games, and I’m not sure even I’ll be able to handle this.

A new augmented reality game called Night Terrors has just popped up on Indiegogo. The title markets itself as “An ultra immersive gaming experience that transforms your environment into a terrifying hellscape,” and it legitimately looks like a title that will make you want to sleep with your lights on (or in another location entirely).

Night Terrors aims to be the scariest game every made by controlling “what you see, what you hear, and where you go. Your device’s LED is all the light you get. The camera and microphone feeds are analyzed and processed in real time. Photorealistic elements are added to the camera feed. Audio is spatialized, mixed with the microphone feed, and then routed to the headphones delivering an immersive binaural audio experience.”

Sounds pretty impressive, doesn’t it? Now take a look at the campaign video, which does a fantastic job of making me not want to play the game (from fear, not because it doesn’t look great). Note that the team is also using practical effects instead of CG, which they believe is the best course of action for augmented reality experiences at this time.

The Novum Analytics team notes that gameplay is deceptively simple. Your only goals are to save the girl, and (of course) survive, and “Figuring out how you’ll do that is the real challenge.”

The Night Terrors team is made up of some incredibly talented developers that have already released some insanely-popular titles (Geared, anyone?), and development of the title is already well underway. The team has set a flexible funding goal of $70,000, and is already nearing $25,000 of that target. Here’s why they’re looking for funding:

We’ve come a long way with the technology, but now need your help in finishing this game. What initially started as an 8 month project has turned into a 24 month project. Instead of ‘settling’ and ‘getting something out’, we recognized the strides that we were making in augmented reality, what Night Terrors could be, and decided to proceed in order to make the experience that we knew was possible. We are incredibly grateful for any funding we might receive and have some great perks to go along with it. Its your chance to be a part in creating a new genre in gaming, and we’re very excited to show you what we’ve made.

The game is set to start beta testing this September, and has plenty of cool rewards available for backers. You can head to the Indiegogo campaign here, and be sure to let us know if you plan to back this ambitious (and terrifying) project!
