President Obama Gets Own Twitter Account, Tweets from iPhone Instead of BlackBerry
President Barack Obama has followed the lead of his daughters: he has “officially” started using an iPhone. The news contradicts his earlier claims that he is not allowed to use an iPhone for security reasons, but today that “myth” was busted by Obama himself via the first tweet he sent out. The tweet came from an iPhone.
Hello, Twitter! It's Barack. Really! Six years in, they're finally giving me my own account.
— President Obama (@POTUS) May 18, 2015
About 18 months ago, the Associated Press posted an article about Barack Obama and the iPhone. Back then, he said that he was not allowed to use an iPhone for “security reasons.” He was allowed, instead, to use an iPad.
His daughters, Sasha and Malia, do have iPhones, but Obama was apparently advised to use only a BlackBerry. Moreover, he had to argue to be allowed to use a BlackBerry device when he became president in 2009.
But the rules are changing, it seems: Today, Barack Obama joined Twitter as @POTUS, describing himself as a “Dad, husband, and 44th President of the United States.” He attracted over 100,000 followers within 20 minutes.
What drew more attention, though, was his first tweet and the device used to send it: “Hello, Twitter! It’s Barack. Really! Six years in, they’re finally giving me my own account.” The tweet came from an iPhone. Does this mean that Apple’s security features are equal to BlackBerry’s? We don’t know yet, but we are going to find out soon.
