Apple’s current 3D Touch technology doesn’t allow scaling up to bigger screens, so Apple’s engineers are busy developing a new technology that would bring the magical touch to the iPads as well, a source told AppleInsider.
Don’t expect the technology to be ready by the time the iPad Air 3 launches — rumoured for the first half of 2016 — though. The source apparently corroborates KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s claims that the iPad Air 3 won’t feature 3D Touch.
However, Apple wants to add 3D Touch support to the iPads (including the 12.9-inch iPad Pro) so the source, who has previously provided accurate information about Apple’s future plans, said the company is working to scale up the pressure-sensing display technology.
Apple first introduced pressure-sensing display technology with Force Touch last year with the Apple Watch. Since then the technology has been integrated into MacBook trackpads as well. 3D Touch, however, was introduced as “the next generation of multi-touch”, as it detects the amount of pressure put on the screen and gives a new control layer to iOS, such as Peek and Pop or Quick Actions.
