Nintendo has today offered up some clues on their upcoming smartphone game, the second of five games to be developed for mobile devices by March 2017 in a partnership with DeNa (via the Wall Street Journal).

During the meeting following the quarterly earnings report, the video game giant confirmed that it is working to push out a second game built around a familiar character, without mentioning which of its franchises it would be.

Those interested might be tempted to watch Nintendo closely, as it will begin prelaunch registration for Miitomo soon. Similar to the second mobile game rollout, the registration date is shrouded in mystery.

Nintendo unveiled Miitomo in October, but as the Wall Street Journal points out, the game was a disappointment for both gamers and investors, because it appeared to be more like a social networking or messaging app than a traditional videogame.

“The second game won’t be another communication app, and we plan to adopt one of our characters that fans are very familiar with,” Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima said.

The videogame giant announced a partnership with DeNa last spring with the aim of entering the mobile market, as it has seen its profits diminishing. However, during a meeting with investors following the release of its 2014 earnings, CEO and president Satoru Iwata promised to roll out five mobile game titles by March 2017, in an effort to focus on quality rather than quantity.
