Nintendo Looking to Enter Smartphone Game Controller Market

Nintendo’s focus on smartphones goes beyond developing apps for iOS and Android: The company is playing with the idea of designing its own controller for mobile gaming, according to general manager of entertainment planning and development, Shinya Takahashi, reports Polygon.

During Nintendo’s annual shareholder meeting, Takahashi pointed to both the software and hardware markets and suggested that the company is aiming to bring the best experience to its customers.

“Physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves,” Takahashi said. “I believe Nintendo’s way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we can make it happen to create such a game.”

The game maker has promised to launch five mobile titles by March next year, and the shareholder meeting was a great opportunity to reinforce Nintendo’s mobile strategy. So far, only two titles have been launched, Miitomo and, today, Pokémon (not available yet in Canada).

Another Nintendo app will be based on its popular Animal Crossing series, and the other, on the Fire Emblem franchise.
