Google Allo for iOS Download Now Available in Canada

Google Allo for iOS launched yesterday in the U.S. App Store only, but it’s now available for download in Canada.

Introducing Google Allo, a smart messaging app that helps you say more and do more. Express yourself better with stickers, Smart Reply, and HUGE emojis & text. Allo brings you the Google Assistant.

Google Allo is dubbed as a smart messaging app but for those worried about privacy, beware Google has backtracked on their policy of keeping chats by default Incognito, but rather they will be accessible on servers available to the company’s algorithms. The app is not Edward Snowden approved, if you’re wondering.

Once you install Google Allo, your cellphone number is required to register (similar to WhatsApp). Google will send you a verification code via text to confirm your registration. Next, you’ll be asked to take a selfie (if you wish) and also come up with your name.

Allo will ask for your location (while you’re using the app) to give you “better answers” if you allow it access.

To ask Allo’s Google Assistant something, you just type your request or to tap and hold on the mic icon on the right. Your recording will be processed by Allo and it will give you answers, plus other one-tap options to get even more info. The Google Assistant even interprets your requests if you use spelling errors.

The assistant can also send you reminders for appointments as well, if you’re into that.

You can get Allo to send you messages daily for weather, news, and more. So far after using the app for a brief time, it really does showcase the power of Google and all the information it collects from its users.

Google Allo was announced earlier this year at the company’s I/O conference, where they also debuted their video calling app, Duo, which hit the App Store in August.

For AI today, Big Data is much higher priority than better algorithm. Everything google does is about data collection. First and primarily for data mining but also for AI training. Those were the twin goals for almost every google initiative over the years, sometimes subtle, sometimes not.

Google voice was marketed as a hip, cool way to stick it to traditional telephony co’s. But it’s goal was data. Tracking who calls who and therefore relationship mapping, but the most important part for them was the most boring. Voice mail. Millions upon millions of message left in normal, conversational cadence to analyze. Android was similarly about maintaining access to data and to present ads, but it opened massive new avenues for data collection about every facet of a person’s life. Hangouts, duo, Photos, Picassa, allo, etc, etc. All vectors for data collection.

We used to call that spyware. Now it’s hip.

We have enough messaging apps. Watch Google kill hangouts in favour it Allo.
