Starting today, Google Translate will begin offering users more accurate text translations in a total of eight languages.
The company revealed that its new Neural Machine Translation efforts, which were first revealed in September, have been extending to support translations to and from the following languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Turkish. These languages make up over 35 percent of the total number of translation queries received by Google.
At a very high level, Google’s Neural Machine Translation allows Google Translate to take on an entire sentence at a time, as opposed to the previous method which translated a word at a time. The new system will provide sentences with better grammar, and it will continue to learn how to make sentences better over time.
Google is claiming that this is the single largest improvement for Google Translate over the past 10 years. The company said that their goal is to extend the Neural Machine Translation method to the over 100 languages supported by Google Translate.
