Microsoft has announced Xbox Game Pass, a download service which will offer gamers unlimited access “to over 100 great games”, which includes backward compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox One titles.
Xbox Game Pass will be priced at $9.99 USD/$11.99 CAD per month, with downloaded games available to play for up to 30 days, offering “endless play”, in a Netflix-like subscription service, with games such as Halo 5: Guardians, Payday 2, NBA 2K16 and SoulCalibur II to be included at launch, in a library that consistently cycles each month removing and adding new titles.
Microsoft says any game purchased through Xbox Game Pass will come at a 20 per cent discount. An alpha preview will start today with a handful of games, while Xbox Live Gold subscribers will get to test it first in the spring.
The company told Polygon they updated their website to remove mention of Windows 10 devices, saying “Right now, we’re focused on launching Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One consoles and look forward to bringing the service to the broader Xbox community later this spring.”
Xbox currently supports iOS customers with their Xbox and Xbox 360 SmartGlass apps.
The company says Xbox Game Pass will launch in 27 markets this spring, with plans to expand to new countries as their catalog availability allows.
