Shaw Internet is Down: Outage Across Canada Affecting TV, Phone Too [u]

Shaw is suffering a widespread Internet outage right now, affecting customers across western Canada and beyond (including yours truly; currently tethering from our iPhone).

According to this outage map from Canadian Outages (the Disqus comments are a good read!), those affected by the Shaw Internet outage include: Edmonton, Calgary, Surrey, Port Coquitlam, Vancouver, New Westminster, Winnipeg, Victoria, Saskatoon, and Toronto.

The outage is also affecting business customers, affecting Internet and phone as well. Shaw is informing customers on Twitter, “We are investigating reports of service troubles. Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.”

Shaw says this is a national outage, with “Some customers nationally may be experiencing an interruption to Internet, Television and Home Phone services.  We are investigating the situation and working to restore service as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Let us know in the comments if you’re suffering from this Shaw Internet outage. What are we supposed to do now?? Actually talk to fellow human beings?

Update 2:45PM PT: Shaw Internet is working again for us in Victoria.

Update 6:19PM PT: Shaw sent the following emailed statement to iPhone in Canada regarding today’s outage:

All Internet and phone services were restored as of 4pm MT for a significant number of Shaw customers across Western Canada impacted by a brief outage this afternoon.

The outage began at 1:27pm MT today, as a result of a software failure during a routine upgrade to our network. We are further investigating the cause.

We sincerely apologize to our customers for this inconvenience.

“Investigating reports of service troubles” I hate it when companies try to downplay a widespread outage! If my Internet is down, I want my ISP to, first and foremost, acknowledge the issue, and address the situation.

Their current statement only means: “Umm… Maybe, just maybe, it might not be us? You sure it’s not you? Yeah we have a couple of reports of mere troubles, let me investigate further (meaning, do nothing and wait for it to go away) and get back to you with the results.”

Rather, what they should say is: “Yes we are having problems. Rest assured our teams at various locations are collectively working on it even as you read this”

Down at our business in Cranbrook, BC. We called in and the guy told us “it’s not just us, other providers aren’t down too!”

Yeah, sure. The other providers that are re-selling your internet probably.

Well said.

I had a 10-hour Internet outage today here in Edmonton. Even now, it gets disconnected intermittently.

On the plus side, I finally got all the motivation I needed. Telus here I come.

You were probably using a mobile hotspot and you never realized.

Shaw lacks basic marketing and communication abilities. Unless you have bookmarked Shaw’s outage site, you’re going to have difficulty in finding it. They repeatedly fail to inform their users of planned outages. Just a few years ago, they sent an email to each subscriber’s Shaw email address.

It’s a shame for sure. Shaw knows that many people are unhappy with Telus and for that reason, their customers service communication is poor. Worst of all, they don’t care if you leave Shaw.

“Worst of all, they don’t care if you leave Shaw.”
You got that right! I had cable service with Shaw and its predecessor Videon for 42 years, the vast majority of those years with Shaw. I pulled the plug on ALL my TV services, keeping just internet, and no one asked why, no one called to find out what could be done to retain me as a customer, or to offer me a promo rate to get me back…nothing, zip, zilch, nada. Cord-cutting is reaching epidemic proportions in Canada and yet when a customer for many decades leaves, they couldn’t care less. Quite the way to run a business….NOT!
