Bell Canada Hacked: 1.9 Million Emails, 1700 Names and Active Phone Numbers Exposed
Bell Canada has issued a statement to say the company was breached, through the “illegal access of Bell customer information by an anonymous hacker.”
The company says roughly 1.9 million active email addresses, along with nearly 1,700 names and active phone numbers were accessed. Bell says there is “no indication that any financial, password or other sensitive personal information was accessed.” This hack is not related to the recent WannaCry malware attacks happening around the globe.
The release says “We apologize to Bell customers for this situation and are contacting those affected directly.”
Bell says they took immediate action to secure they systems, and is working with the RCMP cyber crime unit and has also informed the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
News of this hack surely overshadows the launch of its new mobile live TV service, called Alt TV, which is only available to Bell customers with a Bell Fibe Internet plan.
