Rogers Smart Drive Launches to Connect Your Car Plus Offer Wi-Fi Hotspot

Rogers has launched a new service called Smart Drive, which is a way for customers to monitor their vehicle activity plus offer in-car Wi-Fi.

Dubbed Rogers Smart Drive, it will require customers to purchase a one-time hardware device for $99 on a 2-year term ($200 outright) which plugs into their vehicle, plus a $15/month cost to their Share Everything plan, which will include 1GB of shareable ‘bonus data’ for 12 months.

Here are highlights of Rogers Smart Drive the company wants you to know:

  • Track their car’s location and set alerts to monitor vehicle speed
  • Turn their car into a Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Diagnose car trouble, get maintenance reminders, and be alerted of disturbances, like being hit while parked

“Consumers are looking for more ways to stay connected wherever they are. Of the 24 million cars on Canada’s roads today, over three-quarters don’t have Wi-Fi or any connectivity features,” said Leroy Williams, Vice-President, Rogers Communications, in a statement issued to iPhone in Canada.

“We’re excited to be the first carrier to introduce this kind of device to Canadians. Now, families can have peace of mind about their car maintenance and safety and can connect to the things and people they love worry-free.”

Customers will use the Rogers Smart Drive iOS app to be able to check the status of a connected vehicle, which also will include diagnostic data, location and driving activity. It’s one way to keep track of your family while they’re on the road, explains the company.

The hotspot is made by ZTE, powered by Vancouver-based Mojio’s open platform for connected vehicles. As for the Smart Drive hardware, it is compatible with most cars built after 1996 and plugs into the On Board Diagnostic (OBD-II) port.
