Apple Eyeing Office Space in Famed Hollywood Culver Studios

Apple is considering moving into the Hollywood studio famous for films such as The Matrix and Gone With The Wind as it strives to become a major player in TV and film.

According to a new report from the Financial Times, Apple is interested in leasing space at The Culver Studios, which was built by silent movie pioneer Thomas Ince. The studio is close to Sony Pictures’ studio lot in Culver City, as well as Beats, the audio group Apple bought two years ago.

The studio, which has been owned by RKO, Howard Hughes, and Cecil B DeMille in the past, has more than a dozen soundstages for TV and film work. However, Apple is mainly looking for office space, according to the Financial Times.

“The Culver Studios would give Apple room to expand as it hires top Hollywood talent, according to three people familiar with the discussions,” reads the report. “The site has 13 soundstages up to 32,000 sq. ft in size that can accommodate TV show shoots and full-length feature film work. But Apple is mainly looking for office space, albeit in an iconic location that signals its ambitions to become a big force in Hollywood.”

Both Apple and The Culver Studios declined to comment on the matter, but the move certainly makes sense given that Apple recently set aside $1 billion to acquire and produce original television content over the next year to compete with the likes of Netflix and Amazon.

Apple recently hired Sony duo Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg to lead its push. The duo were in charge the production of hit shows including The Crown and Breaking Bad, and have been set the task of building a library of around a dozen original TV shows.
