Apple Testing Apple Pay Cash Internally on iOS 11.1

Apple employees are reportedly in the testing phase of Apple Pay Cash, the company’s person-to-person payment service, as part of an internal evaluation service ahead of the feature’s release at some point this fall.

According to a recent report from MacRumors, Apple is currently testing Apple Pay Cash internally using iOS 11.1 and an accompanying device certificate, meaning that the service could indeed release with iOS 11.1.

An Apple employee, who was in contact with a MacRumors forum member, shared two screenshots, one of the setup process and one of an attempt the employee made at sending money to him on the iOS 11.1 beta. The transfer didn’t work as both devices need support for the new Apple Pay feature.

Apple Pay Cash is a person-to-person (P2P) payment service, much like Venmo, that allows Apple Pay mobile wallet users to send and receive money within their friends and family network in a quick and secure manner.

Users can provision both credit and debit cards for use with the service, but only debit-based transactions are free. Like other P2P solutions, using a credit card to send money incurs an industry standard 3 percent fee.

Since the Apple employees are testing the person-to-person payment platform internally with iOS 11.1, Apple Pay Cash will likely be included either in future beta testing or when iOS 11.1 is officially released to the public.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any word on when this service will be available in Canada.
