Shaw Price Increases Coming for Select Internet, TV and Phone Plans on June 1

Shaw is set to increase the price of select Internet, TV and phone plans, as of June 1, 2018. The company posted the note on its online community yesterday, in a bid to notify customer ahead of price hikes.

According to the Rate Adjustment FAQ, Shaw explains “Starting June 1, 2018, rates will increase on select residential Internet, TV, and Phone plans. Customers will receive advanced notification of the rate change through their monthly invoice.”

The company goes on to explain, “Canadians are using the Internet more and viewing more TV shows and movies on more devices than ever before. As a leading communications provider, we are committed to giving our customers more access to the leading content and technology they want—now and into the future.”

As for justifying why rates are increasing, Shaw says it is happening so they can “continue providing the same exceptional connectivity and content experience while meeting the evolving needs of our customers as programming costs rise and Internet usage continues to grow.”

Shaw says with Canadians owning more Internet devices and having them connected both in and outside of their home, it adds mean more network capacity is required.

When it comes to increasing TV costs, Shaw blames content producers, who have been passing higher production costs to content providers, as the culprit. Examples cited included high-value shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, which “can cost between three and eight million dollars per episode.” Also, pro sports leagues are another cause of TV price increases, too.

Shaw doesn’t detail how much prices will be increasing though, only to say “the new prices have been or will be specified within a notification included in your monthly invoice.”

The company began informing customers on the Shaw Support Community as of April 2, 2018.

Internet prices aren’t getting cheaper for Canadians, as last month Rogers increased prices, while Bell increased prices in Ontario and Quebec two days ago.

I would like to pick and choose which “content producers” I support….and not be forced to support those I don’t wish to pay for. But right now, with 90% of the channels I get being not watched and forced, I am not pleased. Eventually I expect people will just cancel more and more..

Not a shaw isolated issue to be fair! All major providers will be affected Olley. Who is your current provider and in what marketplace?

This is not new. Shaw increases their prices every year. The only thing different that I can see is that it’s happening sooner. The previous few years, the increase came in August. The problem is that the alternative is exactly the same and they increase to match Shaw.

Hey JaBohn! I checked with our organization and our pricing is actually reduced versus shaw directly! Also, we have a free services program that no other direct company offers to help eliminate your bill completely. I haven’t paid a home phone or internet bill in 3 and half years!

I’ve personally done so and helped others do so with this program.

Let me know if you’d like to chat over the phone and get some details!

I picked up a “Retention” plan from Shaw a few months ago. They renewed my contract for two additional years, so I better not be affected by this increase lol. PS for anybody else on Shaw, Shaw Loyalty/Retention can provide decent discounts if you’re willing to renew your contract.

Just checked my bill…

“If you are on a promotional offer or 2-year ValuePlan with a price guarantee, this increase will not affect the monthly fees for your base services until the promotional period or 2-year ValuePlan term ends. Any Theme Packs or add-ons may be subject to an increase. “

I got fed up with Shaw as well. I remember there was a 12 month period where I swear they increased prices 3 times. I’m with a Shaw reseller now and my wallet is much happier.

Totally! But that is unfortunately how the world of telecom works. In Canada with such a smaller population versus say the States, its no wonder we have some of the highest Telecom bills in the world.

Best thing to do: Find a third party supplier, call retention/loyalty of your existing provider to milk as much promo as you can, or get your services for free (like I myself have done via a third party supplier)

If your interested, give me a shout and we can chat!

Cheers!
