Koodo Launches VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling for iPhone Users
Telus has finally launched VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling for its Koodo customers with an iPhone, as earlier this afternoon a carrier update was pushed to bring support for Apple users.
The screenshot below shows the addition of VoLTE, which lets you use voice and data over the LTE network (instead of voice calls dropping to 3G).

Koodo launched VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling exactly one month ago, but support was limited to the LG V30 Android phone. Today’s announcement is as follows—note the addition of “iPhone 6 or newer”:
So, here’s something cool: Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE is available for Koodo customers with the Android LG V30 or an iPhone 6 or newer! We’re adding additional devices soon!
How to get VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling if you’re a Koodo iPhone customer? You need to install the carrier update by going to Settings > General > About (updated) and the update should pop up. Install it and you should be able to access more LTE settings.
Let us know if you’ve got VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling working on your iPhone 6 or newer on Koodo.
Editor’s note: I would have published this earlier, but I was at Costco.
Thanks everybody!

Working in Edmonton on iPhone X
Be using a VoLTE compatible phone purchased from Koodo1. Bring your own phone(BYOD) from other carriers will not be compatible with this feature.
Wrong. Apple devices are immune to that rule.
Working fine on my unlocked iPhone.
iPhone SE 128GB iOS 10.3.3 purchased from Apple store. Does this feature require higher iOS level in order to allow activation? I am not requested to update the carrier update and LTE config option only has “Off/On toggle.
Looks like it will kick in only if you update to the latest iOS.
Works fine on my BYOD iPhone.
It’s working for the iPhone 6 or newer. It’s about time. I decided to switch to Telus for the $60/10GB deal back in mid-December mainly because of VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling. The latter feature has been so useful to me at home, especially when I’m in my basement.
Hopefully, they’ll add support for the Galaxy S8/S8+, Note8, S9/S9+ and Google Pixel 2/2 XL.
You meant to say Settings > General > About
Yes thanks fixed
Works on iphone7 in Quebec !
Yup, Montreal here on iPhone SE (post paid)..yay!
Koodo for the win! also, I love Costco. Just got a shed there.
Haha same here, $200 bucks off the Lifetime! Those boxes are heavy af
Just wondering if the lgg4 and Lgg6 will be getting the WiFi calling i did have the WiFi calling testing on my lgg4 phone a couple of months ago until they removed it
The next step is for them to add LG and Samsung devices. They’re likely working on it, as evidenced by the Wi-Fi calling you had for a bit. My guess is it’ll be available in the coming weeks.
Thanks Anaron i hope next month because i notice the updates been a month a part
No problem. I noticed the same thing. Probably a staged rollout.
Any chance Bell will add wifi calling to lg G5. It’s something that if they don’t start doing, I might have to get my mom a different phone
I doubt it. So far, they only support Samsung Galaxy devices as well as the iPhone (5S/5C or newer).
Still waiting for the update notification! Grrrr
What kind of phone you have
iPhone X. What am I missing?
You need to be running iOS 11.3 or newer (e.g. 11.3.1).
You can also force the carrier update by going in Settings ??? General ??? About.
And software update in Settings ??? General ??? Software Update.
Got it. how do I use it?
Have you enabled both VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling? If so, then VoLTE is always on as long as you have an LTE signal. And Wi-Fi calling only kicks in when you have poor signal strength for LTE. You can also manually enable it by turning on airplane mode and toggling Wi-Fi on.
As for HD voice, that only works when you call someone else that has VoLTE enabled but they have to be a Koodo or Telus subscriber. I don’t think HD voice works anymore over 3G but I could be wrong.
Thanks
Can’t wait for pixel support!
Right now, only VoLTE is supported with Telus. I expect that’s what Koodo will add either this month or next month. I don’t expect them to add support for Wi-Fi calling.
What’s the fuss about. You already have apps like fongo that does this already.
No, not really. Those apps don’t offer faster call set-up as well as HD voice (unless it’s app-to-app like calling someone on WhatsApp). Also, you can send and receive SMS as well as MMS with Wi-Fi calling. It’s useful if you’re getting poor reception or none at all while having access to a Wi-Fi network.
Messenger,Google duo,Skype etc already been doin that for a while? Are we back in 2005??
No, it hasn’t. You need those apps installed. This is voice over the LTE network without having to use any app other than the built-in Phone app. It allows for faster call set-up, better voice quality and seamless handover between VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling. Also, Wi-Fi calling allows for SMS and MMS over Wi-Fi.
I’m on koodo prepaid with an iPhone 7. Get the update but it only allows LTE for data only. “Cannot Activate LTE Calls. To enable LTE Calls on this account, contact Koodo.”
I had the same issue the first time I tried to enable Wi-Fi calling. But it worked the second time. You might just need to reboot your phone.
Rebooting didn’t fix it. Oh well, maybe it’ll work later. My average of 10 voice minutes a month on 3G isn’t going to suffer, lol.
It says on Koodo’s website that prepaid accounts aren’t supported.
At long last…
Thanks gary, I made the switch to Fido because off volte and wifi calling. Wifi calling was not working with BYOD despite spending lot of otime with tech support. I went back to Koodo and both are working fine on unlocked Iphone 6S
Nice!
Why not iPhone SE???? Damn. The network coverage for koodo in south Burnaby 14th Ave/Kingsway is so poor and most of the time shows “No service”. I’m told they are going to fix it but has been 4 months already.
I use an SE but this fix is not going to help any which way!
Great news! Freedom Mobile, you’re next!
My koodo Iphone 6s is now VoLTE and wi-fi calling enabled. Put phone in airplane mode, then enable wi-fi and tested it and it woks! Cool!
Daughters & Wifes iPhone SE prepaid accounts wont work. i get the message that I have to contact Koodo. I guess they obviously dont want folks to save on cellular calls. Koodo’s wi-fi calling FAQ states prepaid is not avalible as well.
Try turning the phone off. Got same message few times but finally worked after few tries
Did it work for iPhone SE?? Can you please walk me through the steps on the SE? Thanks!
My bad. Didn’t realize it’s iphone SE.
It actually works for iPhone SE. Apparently SE is considered 6 and above! It worked for me.
Yes, the SE is mostly a 6s but missing some things.
I thought the article said only iPhone 6 and above. iPhone SE doesn’t qualify I guess!
The iPhone SE definitely qualifies. What doesn’t qualify is a prepaid plan.
The SE is newer than the 6.
Both of those features are only supported with postpaid accounts. Prepaid will likely never support it.
Worked on 6s+, but I had to go into carrier settings and change LTE to “voice and data”. (It defaulted to data only)
Would’ve been nice if Koodo informed me this was now available. About time, assholes.
Why so salty?
Haha exactly what I was gonna say ?
I had to update iOS to very latest point update for the wifi calling update to show up. Now it’s on apparently, … so should work, … in theory…
You can confirm that VoLTE is working by making a call while disconnected from Wi-Fi. If it drops to 3G, then it isn’t working. And if it stays on LTE, then it’s working. You’ll also notice better call quality between VoLTE-enabled devices on the same network.
To test Wi-Fi calling, simply turn on airplane mode and connect to Wi-Fi. It should show “Koodo Wi-Fi” after 5-10 seconds.
I just got the carrier settings update on my iPhone SE. Sweet! Now if they would just match Videotron with wi-fi roaming!
