Bell MTS Axes Unlimited Flat Rate Data Plan, Prices Jump $5 in Manitoba

Bell MTS has made changes to its plans affecting new customers, with its unlimited flat rate data plans being axed, while most plans seeing a $5 per month increase.

The end of unlimited flat rate data plans means Manitobans no longer have access to a plan which allowed unlimited data use, free of overages.

A Bell MTS spokesperson told MobileSyrup the $5 price increase “keeps us competitive in the marketplace.”

As for the end of the unlimited flat rate data plan, Bell MTS said they now offer a Canada-wide 15GB plan instead, saying “we’ve found that 15GB is far more data than the average customer uses per month.”

Existing customers on the provincial flat rate data plan can retain it for now until they change or upgrade their plans later.

Bell MTS officially launched in Manitoba back in March 2017, after Bell acquired provincial telecom Manitoba Telecom Services. At the time, Bell said they would “maintain current MTS wireless price plans for at least 12 months from today.” Since we are now into July 2018, seeing price increases now from Bell MTS is beyond the 12 months promise window.

Bell MTS is also deploying a broadband network in the province, at the cost of $1 billion over five years.
