Apple Acquires TV Series Rights to Recent New York Times Magazine Article

California

A feature article titled “Losing Earth: The Decade We Almost Stopped Climate Change” filled an entire recent issue of The New York Times Magazine, detailing climate change and the political forces that have hampered efforts to combat the situation. Today, Apple has announced that it has bought the television rights to a series based on that article.

The “Losing Earth” article recounted how, from 1979 to 1989, a small group of American scientists, activists, and politicians tried to save the world from the ravages of climate change before it was too late. The article was produced with the support of the Pulitzer Center and was based on more than 18 months of reporting and over 100 interviews.

According to The New York Times, the series will be produced by Anonymous Content, a production, and management company known for films like “Spotlight” and partly owned by a firm controlled by Laurene Powell Jobs.

Meanwhile, Nathaniel Rich, the writer of the novelistic article, will serve as an executive producer with Steve Golin, the Oscar-winning founder of Anonymous.

Apple plans to start streaming its television offerings next year when it will begin competing against Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu. The company started courting producers last year with a budget of about $1 billion to work with and has already signed content deals with the likes of J. J. AbramsSteven Spielberg, Oprah WinfreyReese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, among many others.
