Freedom Mobile Confirms Launches in Victoria, Red Deer and More in 2019 [LIST]
Shaw’s Freedom Mobile has confirmed specific launches cities coming in 2019, putting to rest rumours of where it may debut next.
Paul McAleese, president of wireless at Shaw, confirmed in an interview with The Financial Post the company will expand Freedom Mobile to the following cities in BC, Alberta and Ontario in 2019:
- Victoria, BC
- Nanaimo, BC
- Red Deer, Alberta
- Medicine Hat, Alberta
- Belleville, Ontario
- Brockville, Ontario
- Cornwall, Ontario
- “Other towns along Highway 401” in Ontario
Back in May, Freedom Mobile noted it wanted to launch in Victoria, along with proposed towers for the Comox Valley, also on Vancouver Island.
The Shaw president also didn’t mince words when speaking about how Freedom Mobile operates with its data pricing structure, compared to incumbents such as Rogers, Telus and Bell.
“Typically, the more you consume of something, the less you pay for it,” McAleese explained, adding, “Oh, I get why it’s been priced this way. It’s been priced this way because it’s an extremely profitable way to do it, which is why Canada has the highest prices in the Western world for wireless use.”
Freedom Mobile believes their latest 100GB LTE data bonus (and other Black Friday data bonuses) will entice new users to sign up in the cities it operates. “No one wants 3G,” said McAleese. “Customers have voted with their wallets and their feet on wanting to move to LTE.”
For the company’s latest fiscal year, which ended on August 31, Freedom Mobile added nearly 267,000 wireless customers on contract, almost a 300% increase compared to the prior year, due to plentiful 10GB data plans and finally offering Apple’s latest iPhones.
