Google Maps for iOS Adds ‘Mixed Mode’ to Combine Multiple Transit Options
Google Maps is adding a Mixed Mode for choosing multiple transit options to plan your trips. With this new mode, you will be able to plan your ride in using two or more options. For example, you could take a train to the nearest station and book an Uber from the station to your final destination. Maps can even show you estimated time and cost for the trip, considering the options that you select.
Here is an example scenario according to The Keyword, Google’s official blog: “Say you’re taking the subway home from a friend’s house, but your apartment is a bit too far from the station to get to on foot. Catching a ridesharing vehicle can help you travel that short distance quickly. Or, you’re headed to work at the peak of the busy back-to-school season so you need to ride your bike to the nearest bus stop to make that important 9 a.m. meeting on time.”
How to Use Mixed Mode
The next time you use Directions in Google Maps, look for the “Transit” tab. From here, choose one of the Mixed Mode options available. You will see them under recommended routes and also under a new section named “Mixed Mode”.
Each of these options will also show you the estimated cost and time required to reach your destination. If you are taking ridesharing during your trip, there will be additional customization options. For example, if your plan is to take an Uber from the train station, you will be able to choose between Uber Pool or UberX. If you choose biking as an option, Maps will show you “routes tailored for cyclists”. You ETA will also be calculated based on this.
Google says that these “new transit directions paired with biking and ridesharing will start rolling out in the coming weeks on Android and iOS in 30 countries around the globe.”
