Washington ‘Black Lives Matter’ Street Mural Can Now Be Seen on Apple Maps

Apple has updated its satellite view on the two-block area of Washington’s 16th St NW, which has now been dubbed ‘Black Lives Matter Plaza NW’.

Spotted by 9to5Mac, the new satellite stills show off the painted street sign running down the two blocks which reads ‘Black Lives Matter’. The mural consisting of bold yellow writing was commissioned by Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser who tweeted about the importance of the message.

Apple appears to have made quick work in updating the satellite view on Apple Maps. Typically, images seen through the app are months olds by the time an update is in place. Apple has also updated the section to reflect the renaming of 16th St NW to  Black Lives Matter Plaza NW.

In the past two weeks since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, peaceful protests have been held across the US and Canada. Apple has been a supporter, with Tim Cook issuing a public letter speaking against racial injustices. In addition, Cook wrote a letter to employees, offering resources and said the company will be donating to a number of non-profit organizations. Apple had also participated in Blackout Tuesday through Apple Music, cancelling its Beats 1 radio schedule.
