Public Mobile to Launch $30/2GB Plan to Replace $35/1.5GB Plan

Telus-owned Public Mobile has announced it is launching a new $30/2GB plan with 3G speeds on Friday, August 7, 2020. The Public Mobile network runs on Telus LTE but throttled to 3G speeds.

This new plan will be “available for a limited time only” and as of today, Thursday, August 6, the old $35/1.5GB plan will expire at 11:59PM ET.

“If you have the $35 1.5GB plan today and want to continue with it, no action is required. However, if you switch to another plan you will not be able to switch back to the $35 1.5GB plan after August 6, 2020 as it will no longer be available,” explains Public Mobile.

As the federal government continues to put pressure on Canada’s wireless carriers to lower select prices by 25%, it appears this move may be tied to exceeding Ottawa’s demands.

But it’s most likely price-matching a similar offer released a while back by Bell’s prepaid service, Lucky Mobile. Rogers’ prepaid brand, Chatr, still has a $35/1.5GB plan but you can bet they will match fellow rivals in releasing a similar 2GB plan for $30.

Last month, a Telus spokesperson told iPhone in Canada in a statement, Public Mobile had “exceeded” the government’s 2GB, 4GB and 6GB data targets, by offering respective plans at $35/2GB, $40/4.5GB and $50/8GB.

“We are committed to developing plans that meet the needs of Canadians and will continue to refine our offerings as those needs evolve,” added the Telus spokesperson.
