Quibi Apps Launch for Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV [Update: It’s Dead]

Originally launched as a mobile-only streaming service back in April, Quibi has now debuted dedicated apps for Apple TV 4/4K, Fire TV and Android TV.

Quibi has a Canadian content partnership with Bell Media but so far the service has failed to gain popularity, with one report noting in July it had lost over 90 per cent of early users after free trials expired.

Fast forward to October and Quibi has updated a support article to indicate it now has apps to let customers watch on televisions, instead of using AirPlay or Chromecast (via The Verge).

According to The Information, Quibi tried to sell its catalogue to NBCUniveral and Facebook, but both companies declined the offer. It’s rumoured that Quibi chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg is contemplating shutting down the streaming service, which happened to launch during the height of COVID-19.

Are you watching Quibi? It’s not easy launching a streaming service to compete with giants such as Netflix and Disney+. Quibi isn’t going to be around for much longer, we suspect.

Update: According to The Wall Street Journal, Quibi is now dead:

On Wednesday, founder Jeffrey Katzenberg called Quibi investors to tell them he is shutting the service down, some of the people said.

Mr. Katzenberg and Chief Executive Meg Whitman decided to shut down the company in an effort to return as much capital to investors as possible instead of trying to prolong the life of the company and risk losing more money, according to the people familiar with the matter.
