iFixit PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Teardown Out, Console Next

Deliveries for the PlayStation 5’s new DualSense controller have already begun a few days ahead of the console’s official launch on November 12th. The folks at iFixit were able to get their hands on one of these controllers, and doing what they do, tore it down to its very foundations.

The all-new DualSense controller succeeds the PS4’s DualShock 4 controller, bringing with it an all-new haptic feedback system, revamped triggers, an excellent new grip, and a pretty futuristic design.

Surprisingly, all you need to (rather cleanly) open and disassemble a DualSense controller is a Phillips #00 screwdriver, a spudger, and a pair of tweezers!

Opening the controller up is a simple matter of removing all of the screws (a couple of which are sneakily hiding under the L1 and R1 buttons!), and gently prying the frame open with a spudger.

Once inside, the folks at iFixit were happy to find that the DualSense controller’s battery, like its predecessors, is not glued down, making it easy to replace.

iFixit found that the adaptive and (now) adjustable triggers are connected to the controller’s main logic board via cables, but unfortunately, the haptic feedback system, the USB-C charging port, and joysticks are all soldered down, making them pretty hard to repair or replace.

The DualSense controller seemingly uses the same Alps joysticks as the DualShock 4, which is pretty interesting considering the two controllers were launched 7 years apart.
