Apple’s M1 iPad Pro Cellular Lets You Install Updates Over 5G

According to MacRumors, cellular variants of the M1-equipped 2021 iPad Pro can download and install firmware updates over 5G networks, much like the 5G-enabled iPhone 12 family. The information comes directly from a recently published/updated Apple Support document pertaining to 5G networking on the new iPad Pro.

In order to do so, however, the Allow more data on 5G option must be enabled. The setting is enabled by default on some unlimited data plans with a select few carriers, but other users will have to turn the option on manually.

To enable the Allow more data on 5G option on a 2021 iPad Pro, you need to:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Cellular Data > Cellular Data Options.
  3. Tap on Data Mode.
  4.  Select the Allow more data on 5G option to enable it.

Switching to the option will not only allow you to download iPadOS updates over 5G, but also provide you with significantly better quality on FaceTime, higher-definition content while streaming from Apple TV or Apple Music, and a better overall experience over cellular networks. The catch? You’ll burn through a lot more data volume.

The Apple Support document in question says the following about the option:

Enables higher data-usage features for apps and system tasks. These include higher-quality FaceTime, high-definition content on Apple TV, Apple Music songs and videos, and iPadOS updates over cellular. This setting also allows third-party apps to use more cellular data for enhanced experiences. This is the default setting with some unlimited-data plans, depending on your carrier. This setting uses more cellular data.

Some Rogers customers noted Infinite plans don’t allow tablets to access the company’s 5G network. We’ll have more on this later.

The 2021 iPad Pro has been sold out in Canada so far, with the 12.9″ model delivering well into July already.
