Apple Has Sold More Than 100 Million iPhone 12 Units Since Launch: Counterpoint

Apple has sold more than 100 million iPhone 12 handsets since the 5G-enabled devices launched late last year.

Counterpoint Research claims Apple sold more than 100 million iPhone 12 units since launch, with the threshold actually reached in April this year. That’s two months faster than the iPhone 11 series and nearly the same as the iPhone 6 series, which represented Apple’s first volume supercycle.

“The iPhone 12 series’ cumulative global sales crossed the 100 million units mark in April 2021, according to Counterpoint Research’s mobile handset Market Pulse Service,” writes Counterpoint’s Varun Mishra. “The series was able to achieve this feat in the seventh month after its launch, which is two months earlier than the iPhone 11 series.”

“[It is] almost the same as the iPhone 6 series that helped Apple achieve its first volume super-cycle at the cusp of 4G transition,” continues Mishra. “With the iPhone 12 series, Apple has achieved another volume super-cycle after six generations of iPhones and at the cusp of 5G transition.”

The report says that demand for 5G and OLED screens has attracted customers and that Apple’s average selling price of the iPhone is at an all-time high. The report claims that Apple’s higher-end iPhone 12 Pro is preferred by consumers and that the iPhone 12 Pro Max accounts for some 29 percent of all sales, more than the 11 Pro Max did.

“There has also been a shift in model preferences between the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 series,” Counterpoint explains. “Consumers preferred the highest version of the iPhone 12 series during the first seven months after the series’ launch. The share of the Pro Max version in the iPhone 12 series sales was 29%, compared to the 25% for the same model of the iPhone 11 series. This is also one of the reasons for the iPhone 12 series grossing 22% more revenue than the iPhone 11 series in the first seven months of its launch.”

Separately, Counterpoint Research has recently also claimed that the active user base of the iPhone 12 grew faster than that of the iPhone 11, despite the iPhone 12 range going on sale substantially later in the year than usual.
