Alongside the Release Candidate (RC) builds for iOS 15.5 and macOS 12.4 that started rolling out to developers on Thursday, Apple also released the RC build for Studio Display Firmware 15.5, which fixes image quality issues on the built-in webcam — reports 9to5Mac.
Apple’s launch of the A13 Bionic-equipped Studio Display in March was followed by mounting complaints of subpar webcam quality from users, who were disappointed with the built-in shooter’s washed-out, noisy images and issues with Center Stage.
The Cupertino, California-based tech giant described the problems users were complaining of as “last minute” software bugs, adding that they would be fixed with future software updates.
According to Apple, Firmware 15.5 “refines camera tuning, including improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing.” Studio Display owners who have already updated to Firmware 15.5 have reported improvements in the image quality of the built-in webcam, noting increased sharpness and more natural colours.
However, there’s only so much that software tuning and updates will do for the Studio Display’s webcam, given that the sensor itself is a rather small ultra-wide shooter.
Studio Display Firmware 15.5 RC is only available to beta testers at the moment, but a public release is imminent since Release Candidate builds represent (almost) final versions of an update and are usually released days before them.
Upon public release, Firmware 15.5 will be available as a standalone software update for the Studio Display, meaning there’s no requirement to install macOS Monterey 12.4 prior, saving Apple customers time and allowing for a quick webcam fix right away.
