Freedom Mobile Rolling Out 3500 MHz ‘5G+’ Like Rogers, Telus, Bell [Update]

Quebecor’s Freedom Mobile has started rolling out its 3500 MHz spectrum, following in the footsteps of Rogers, Telus and Bell.

The ‘Big 3’ started rolling out its 3500 MHz spectrum for “5G+” back in 2022. This spectrum allows for faster 5G and wider coverage and capacity. The federal government bagged $8.91 billion from telecoms from a July 2021 auction, as the 3500 MHz spectrum was repurposed from fixed wireless internet to 5G instead.

Just over a week and half ago, an official Freedom Mobile account on Reddit confirmed the company had started deploying 3500 MHz 5G sites.

Someone asked on Reddit if Freedom Mobile was going to raise 5G speeds to 250 Mbps download instead of 150 Mbps. That’s when “JP_FreedomMobile”, an official account from the wireless carrier replied, “We don’t brand 5G+ per se, but we have deployed 3500mhz 5G sites (commonly called 5G+ by the big 3) for weeks now. We have a couple in the GTA and, yes, they are fast.”

Freedom Mobile didn’t specific any cities other than mentioning the Greater Toronto Area. We’ve reached out to Freedom Mobile for further comment and information, stay tuned. Are you seeing some faster than normal 5G download speeds in the GTA? If so, you might have 3500 MHz Freedom Mobile sites activated in your area.

Update July 2, 2024, 12:35pm PDT: Freedom Mobile confirmed to iPhone in Canada it has deployed 3500mhz 5G sites “for weeks now” in both Toronto and Vancouver. The company said they plan to roll out several new sites over the “coming months.”

Thanks C!
