As part of its big splash for back to school savings, Quebecor’s Freedom Mobile has ramped up its pressure on Rogers, Telus and Bell, by bringing a new suite of monthly plans that are all 5G and include US and Mexico roaming.
“A year ago, Freedom made waves with the introduction of its top-notch 5G network and its first ever wireless plan covering Canada, U.S. and Mexico,” says Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, the parent company of Freedom Mobile, in a statement to iPhone in Canada.
“Now we’re bringing these benefits – and more! – to all our wireless offerings as we continue to deliver on our promise to increase competition in the telecom market. In addition to providing better service and meaningful cost savings to Canadians, we have also been making major improvements to Freedom’s wireless network to make sure all our customers enjoy the best possible experience wherever they are. And we’re not stopping there,” said Péladeau.

Now, you’ll notice the $5/month credit for applicable plans are only available for 18 months and not 24 months as we’ve seen before. But Freedom says if you sign up for Internet at any time within that 18 month span, your $5/month credit will then remain forever, as long as you are subscribed to both an eligible wireless plan and home Internet plan.
Freedom says over 25 million Canadians in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and B.C. can subscribe to its network, which has a 93% customer approval rating according to a Léger survey. Freedom says Home Internet and TV services are also available from $39/month and $10/month.
These are some pretty aggressive plans–will Rogers, Telus and Bell play ball and match? Public Mobile’s Canada-US plans are ending today so we may see something new starting tomorrow. Let the cellphone wars begin as we start the back to school season.

Damn, the value in “Canada-U.S.-Mexico + Roam Beyond – $55/month” is beyond incredible. Especially with including not only the Roam Beyond but also both a tablet AND watch plan? Shots. Fired.
I can save $10/Apple Watch and Visual VM at $4 is cheaper too. I am keeping an eye on Freedom when my contract is up.
Working for 1 of the big 3 telcos… The churn rate to freedom is minimal, next to nothing. Nobody is shaking in their boots because of what Freedom is doing. At best, this will be matched through Chatr, Lucky and or Public, which won't have any traction aside from a few tech/deal savvy individuals.
Telus just hiked my rates, so I'm seriously looking at switching
Yeah, the network reputation has not recovered as yet.
No more loyalty to public here… Even if they matched the deal, all the low balling BS they did lately is enough for me to jump ship!
Right, that’s why all the flanker brands lowered/altered their plans to match. Because they’re not worried at all.
That’s why Rogers offers $45 5G plans to people who switch to Freedom right? Because they’re not worried.
Come’on son.
Does this apply to prepaid plans as well??
To be clear, these are new plans, but these plans are available in prepaid as well.
You should change to a new prepaid plan to take advantage.
Dumped Rogers for Freedom years ago and have never regretted it. My cell phone bill has gradually gotten less and I have gotten more value. Now looks like I will get another country added. 😁
So this is interesting because it’s actually a clever Robellus technique of adding significant value to a new plan with a price increase. (At the bottom end, they just raised their base plan (for data users) from $34 to $35).
They then also added a lot of value to the higher plans (added roam beyond data) in order to entice you to upgrade (I guess the roam beyond exclusive plans weren’t THAT popular even though people loved the idea of them).
So I kinda feel both ways about it. I’m one hand they’re blowing the other carriers out of the water in terms of value in a way that would shock 5-10 years ago Me, but on the other hand they used a tactic reminds me a little too much of the big 3 for me to feel comfortable.
I think the roam beyond included plans still have a 3 months minimum stipulation too don’t they? So there’s that element as well.
There was an excited moment when I changed plans where I got a message that IPhone Visual voicemail add-on is not supported in the new plan and thought they took Fizz’s lead and started including the feature but alas that was not the case. You just need to re-add the same identical add-on. 🙁
(Live voicemail doesn’t work while roaming so don’t hassle me about “you don’t need VVM anymore dummy”)
