Freedom Mobile Expands to 50 More Cities in B.C. and Alberta
Freedom Mobile has announced it has expanded service to 50 more cities in B.C. and Alberta, pointing out over 250,000 more Canadians can now sign up for the wireless service. New service areas include the likes of Chilliwack, Hope, Salmon Arm, Camrose, Edberg and more.
Quebecor-owned Freedom Mobile says this latest service expansion is thanks to the CRTC’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) framework, which also allowed it to launch recently in Manitoba.
“Consumers from across Canada have been demanding more competition in wireless for a very long time,” says Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of Quebecor, the parent company of Freedom Mobile, in a statement to iPhone in Canada. “We’re happy to continue to bring Canadians the many benefits of having a strong fourth player in the market”.
Freedom also said it has been expanding 5G areas plus launching new cell sites across the country, over the past few months. The company also has been deploying 3500 MHz spectrum on numerous cell sites, bringing faster speeds and lower latency.
We have yet to see a Big 3 flanker brand match Freedom Mobile’s aggressively-priced Canada-US plans, such as its $34/50GB Canada-US 5G plan, aside from Telus-owned Public Mobile. It’ll be interesting to see if Black Friday will bring better plans than last year.

Sweet!
Having tried out Freedom Mobile twice in the last year I was sooo close to messaging them today to try another eSIM and their USA/Canada plan for $29 to see if things have improved in Abbotsford, BC. I so badly want Freedom to work well, but each of the times I've tried it just has failed me. Works great in the USA, and where I work in Langley, BC, but at home in Abbotsford I often get dropped to 3G and have no internet at that point (not slow, it doesn't work, my iPhone says I have no internet). So I'll stick with my PM USA/Canada plan for now. The new cities added (such as Chilliwack, BC) appear to not be because of new hardware, but because of new MVNO sharing so I doubt that things will actually improve for me.
Well, I bit the bullet and got an eSIM and am trying it out. To my surprise, I so far have never been dropped down to 3G and the LTE/5G has been working where I live and work. They must have actually made improvements in Abbotsford. It's slow, as you would expect, but that's better than not working at all which 6 months ago was an issue.
So far, this doesn’t seem to be an actual native coverage increase. I’m getting ‘Nationwide’ in these new communities so no actual change. Perhaps Freedom is just allowing new subscribers in anticipation of future coverage increases?
