Apple Opens New Research Lab in Shenzhen, China

Apple has opened the doors to its latest research facility in Shenzhen, China. The lab is being used to conduct the company’s research and development across flagship products like iPhone, iPad, and more.

The research lab first opened on Thursday, October 10th in the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong district. According to South China Morning Postthe facility is said to be under the directive of the central government to deepen the city’s partnerships with tech giants such as Apple.

Apple’s newest research lab is said to span 215,000 square feet in the initial phase. The facility is set to become Apple’s research and development hub in the Greater Bay Area. The lab is said to be seeking to employ 1,000 staff members both from domestic talent pools as well as international. It’s described as the “most extensive” lab outside of Apple’s US-based facilities. It’s also a metric of the company’s commitment to the Chinese market.

Apple will conduct extensive research and development of many flagship devices at the facility. This includes devices like the iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro spacial computing technology.

Apple’s latest move in Shenzhen arrives as rival competition continues to brew within China. Apple is already in a contentious battle with Shenzhen-based Huawei, as the latter continues to revive its smartphone business. For the first time in four years, Huawei has sold more smartphones in mainland China than Apple in August, according to data from research firm CINNO.

Although Apple continues to diversify its supply chain in other major markets like India, Apple does continue to invest in China. The new Shenzhen lab joins other facilities located in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Shenzhen. Apple’s research and development team in China has reportedly doubled over the past five years.

Have never understood Cook’s continued hardon for China. It was a great ride for the developed world to have cheaper labour, but it’s only going to go downhill now.

That helps explain your abstract and lack of independent critical thinking…
