Rogers Storm-Ready WiFi Keeps You Online During Outages

Rogers has introduced a new product called Xfinity Storm-Ready WiFi, designed to keep homes connected during power or internet outages.

The device automatically switches to Rogers’ cellular network when the primary internet service or power goes down. A built-in rechargeable battery provides up to four hours of backup power, ensuring customers can continue to work or stream without interruptions.

Here’s what Storm-Ready WiFi offers:

  • Battery Backup: Keeps WiFi running for up to 4 hours during outages.
  • Automatic Cellular Backup: Switches to Rogers’ network when internet or power fails, with real-time updates through the Rogers Xfinity app.
  • WiFi Extender: Enhances home WiFi coverage for everyday use, doubling as a WiFi booster.

You will need a compatible Rogers Xfinity WiFi gateway (gen 2 or gen 3) and be a Rogers with Shaw customer. An intro offer for the new Storm-Ready WiFi is at $15/month.

When the backup cellular kicks in, you’ll get access to Rogers LTE with no data overages. Internet speeds will be up to 30 Mbps download and 7 Mbps upload (then changes up to 10/2 Mbps after 500GB of usage). Rogers says streaming speeds are capped at 3 Mbps and Rogers Voice home phone service is not supported. So essentially you’ll be back online still, but you won’t be getting max speeds due to LTE connectivity. It’s essentially a way to stay connected.

The product is currently available in B.C. and will roll out across Canada starting in February 2025. Customers can pre-order now.

Other solutions for those in remote areas prone to power and internet outages is to get SpaceX’s Starlink internet, then buy your own battery backup. You will be able to stay connected online with high speed internet (costs $140/month after initial $499 one-time hardware).
