Meta’s Llama large language model (LLM) has experienced explosive growth throughout 2024. With more than 650 million downloads, it has solidified its position as a leading AI framework for innovation and adoption.
2024 has seen Meta push the boundaries of AI capabilities with the release of successive Llama 3 series models. The journey began with Llama 3, followed by the groundbreaking Llama 3.1 in July. This release featured the 405B model, the first frontier-level open AI system, showcasing cutting-edge performance.
The pace of innovation continued at Connect 2024 with the unveiling of Llama 3.2, Meta’s first-ever multimodal models. These additions include small, lightweight text-only versions optimized for edge devices and mobile platforms.
Llama’s success would not be possible without its extensive network of hardware and software collaborators. Partners like AWS, AMD, Microsoft Azure, Dell, NVIDIA, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud play pivotal roles in ensuring that Llama models operate efficiently across various environments.
The AI model’s appeal extends well beyond the U.S., with adoption accelerating globally. Downloads have surged across Latin America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrating its versatility and growing relevance in emerging markets. License approvals for Llama have doubled in the last six months, further cementing its role as a universal AI model for developers worldwide.
The open-source community has also been instrumental in Llama’s evolution. On Hugging Face alone, more than 85,000 Llama-derived models have been published—a fivefold increase since the year’s start.
Mark Zuckerberg highlighted that Llama has averaged one million downloads daily since its launch in February 2023. With nearly 600 million active users of Meta AI tools globally, the company is on track to position its assistant as the most widely used AI solution by year-end.
