Apple is reportedly preparing to launch an Android app for its Apple TV+ streaming service for the first time, set to come sometime today. The Apple TV+ app launched back in 2019 so it’s been five years with no support for Android.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, people familiar with the matter say Apple could announce the app as soon as Wednesday.
Last May, Gurman first reported an Android app for Apple TV+ was in the works. While Apple already offers its Music app on Android, expanding TV+ signals a push to compete with streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+.
In addition to the Android app, sources say Apple will also make its MLS Season Pass available on Android, allowing users to stream Major League Soccer matches. This will of course expand the audience for MLS matches and increase Apple TV+ subscriber numbers.
Apple debuted Apple Music for Android users back in November 2015, which was one of the company’s first expansions beyond its own ecosystem. Even a new Apple Music Classical app was released for Android, before it reached the iPad and Mac. When it comes to Apple’s app release, go figure.
Now, a native Apple TV+ Android app is coming, to replace Android users from viewing via a browser on tv.apple.com. The move makes sense, considering you can already download the Apple TV+ app on Google TV, Android TV and Amazon Fire TV, which are all Android-based streaming devices.
Apple TV+ costs $12.99/month in Canada but annual plans and Apple One bundles are also available.
