Rogers ‘Unlimited’ Data Plans are Still Misleading, Repeats Bureau

The Competition Bureau is doubling down on its claim that Rogers’ “Infinite” wireless plans are misleading, arguing that the company’s advertisements give the false impression of truly unlimited data.

In December, the Bureau sued Rogers, saying its “unlimited data” promise is deceptive because customers experience severe slowdowns—with data speeds reduced by more than 99%—once they hit their plan’s cap. Rogers, however, argues that most customers never reach that limit.

In its recent defence, Rogers said it fully discloses plan details and accused the Bureau of unfairly targeting the company for using an advertising style common in the industry. The company also claimed that its 2019 launch of Infinite plans increased competition in the market, reports the Canadian Press.

But Competition Commissioner Matthew Boswell pushed back, saying the fact that other carriers copied Rogers’ advertising approach is an aggravating factor, not a defence. He also rejected Rogers’ claim that its other ads clarify the plan details, arguing that misleading advertising cannot be excused by later, less-misleading ads.

Grab your popcorn folks, this saga is far from over. What do you think about the advertising of “unlimited” data plans, that are only full speed for your existing data bucket?

We now live in a country where most people are extremely privileged (wealthy, for the simpletons) and show little concern for prices and privacy. This mindset includes government officials and executives, unless they’ve personally faced negative consequences.

They make a good point! If data speeds were throttled to like 3 Mbps or maybe even 1.5 Mbps, at least it'd still be usable!
