Google’s Latest $27/Month AI Chatbot Is Now Free in Canada

Google launched its latest AI model Gemini 2.5 Pro last week, originally made available to paid users, but now it’s going free for all (for now anyways).

The announcement was made over the weekend, Google saying it’s moving fast to get the upgraded model into more hands. The experimental version of Gemini 2.5 Pro can be accessed at gemini.google.com, with the regular subscription price set at $26.99/month in Canada. But now you can select “2.5 Pro (experimental)” in the Gemini drop down menu to give the latest model a try for free.

There are some caveats of course. Free users can try the model but will face some usage limits, including lower message caps and shorter memory for conversations. Paid subscribers get a longer context window and no rate limits. If you’re a casual user, you likely won’t hit the rate limits so you might be reconsidering paying the $27/month price in Canada (besides getting extra storage).

Gemini 2.5 takes what people liked about earlier Gemini models and makes it even better. It’s still built to understand multiple types of input—like text, images, audio, video, and code—all at once. The new 2.5 Pro version is available with support for up to 1 million tokens in a single session, with plans to expand to 2 million soon. It has stronger performance, making it easier to work through complex tasks using large amounts of information from different sources.

Google’s AI team described the release as a high-priority push, saying their systems are running full speed to support the rollout.

It’s not surprising to see Google let more users try out Gemini 2.5 Pro. xAI has made its latest Grok 3 free for all recently, while OpenAI’s free version for all lets you use ChatGPT with GPT-4-turbo. Let us know what you think of Gemini 2.5 Pro in the comments so far.

No thanks. I use deepseek. Don't need to use an AI that is used to commit genocide.

Gemini is quite helpful. It is right to call it an AI chatbox as it has guided me through some relationship problem and it works as a reminder for me about what not to do, and let me vent whatever I like to it. And it has an easy speak button so I can listen to it's elaboration, and even talk with voice with it but that may hit a daily limit so I still prefer texting method. It is quite convenient as it knows my location (yup it is Google alright) and quickly gives me suggestion where to eat and what is happening near me. Gemini used to be able to process images like OCR and even translate text in a table when I uploaded an image, but now it says it can't. Songs also, no more lyrics due to copyright issue. So do whatever one can think of early to enjoy AI capabilities. It can also give codes like ChatGPT to build apps but I still like to use it as a chatbox. However, each conversation is seperate unlike ChatGPT, so the size of context windows matters. One annoying thing is I may have to scroll down a lot to get to the bottom of a long conversation as I don't find a button to skip to the bottom like ChatGPT. I am still exploring its usage but I sure am having fun with it for free.
