Nintendo Switch 2 Hands-On: Bigger Screen, Better Graphics, and More

Nintendo is due to launch the Switch 2 on June 9, but ahead of that, The Verge‘s Owen Grove had the pleasure to go hands-on with the sequel to one of the best-selling gaming consoles ever made and see if it lives up to its predecessor.

“Nintendo’s new console is the Switch but slightly bigger and slightly better,” Grove noted as he recounted his experience with the device, highlighting its 7.9-inch LCD display (compared to the OG Switch’s measly 6.2-inch screen and the Switch OLED’s 7-inch display) and beefier hardware.

Alongside a release date, Nintendo today also confirmed hardware specs and pricing for the Switch 2. The next-gen console is powered by an improved Nvidia GPU that features dedicated Ray Tracing (RT) cores for advanced, real-time lighting effects and Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), Nvidia’s AI upscaling technology.

Thanks to its new hardware, the Switch 2 delivers better frame rates, smoother gameplay, and new gaming experiences — like 24-participant races in Mario Kart World and an extensively destructible environment in Donkey Kong Bananza. Grove said the improvements were pretty clear in his hands-on experience with the Switch 2 and its accompanying games.

Hand-feel and comfort are make-or-break for a handheld console, and Grove said the Switch 2 “is noticeably larger, but it’s not uncomfortable.” He was also impressed with the Joy-Con controllers’ new mouse-like functionality and Nintendo’s HD Rumble 2 vibration system, although the success of both features will depend on how (and if) game developers choose to adopt them.

“The Switch 2 isn’t a massive upgrade, and its differences aren’t necessarily obvious at a glance, but Nintendo has been able to put together an initial lineup of games that show what’s possible with its improved hardware,” Grove concluded.

You can pre-order the Switch 2 in Canada for $629.99 (console-only) starting next week on Wednesday, April 9. As for games, some of the more premium titles from Nintendo and others could cost up to $125 or more after factoring in exchange rates.

Do you plan on pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 or will you wait until it comes out to see if its worth the price tag? Let us know in the comments below.

Earning $18,654 in one month sounded like a scam to me at first. But after giving this online work system a try. I’ve been doing it for a few months now, and the results are unbelievable. You only need a phone or laptop and a few hours of your time. The work is simple, and they pay every week. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a job that’s this flexible and pays this well. If earning serious money from home sounds good to you, definitely check it out.
