How Nvidia Supercharged Graphics in the Nintendo Switch 2

Nvidia has confirmed key hardware details for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, officially unveiled on April 2, highlighting major performance upgrades powered by a custom Nvidia processor.

The new console includes an Nvidia GPU with dedicated Ray Tracing (RT) and Tensor Cores, enabling advanced lighting effects, AI-enhanced graphics, and smoother gameplay. Simply put, ray tracing is a special way for video games to make light, shadows, and reflections look more real — like in a movie.

With Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), this uses AI to turn a lower-quality game image into one that looks high-quality, helping games run faster without losing sharpness.

Here’s what Nvidia detailed about the Nintendo Switch 2:

  • 4K gaming in TV mode
  • 120 FPS at 1080p in handheld mode
  • HDR support and AI upscaling for sharper visuals
  • Ray tracing for lifelike lighting and reflections
  • DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) for higher resolution without sacrificing performance
  • G-SYNC with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) in handheld mode for tear-free visuals
  • AI features like face tracking and background removal in video chat

Nvidia touted the system reflects over 1,000 engineer-years of work, including custom chip design and developer tools. The Switch 2 is expected to deliver up to 10x the graphics performance of the original model said Nvidia, with improvements aimed at both gamers and developers.

The Nintendo Switch 2 launches pre-orders on April 9 and launches on June 5. Click here to learn how to pre-order the Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada.
