Gemini AI Coming to Android Auto and Google Built-In Cars

Google is adding more smarts to the driving experience with the introduction of Gemini AI to Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, as announced at today’s The Android Show: I/O Edition.

The feature will start rolling out to Android Auto-supported vehicles in the coming months and to Google built-in models, including the Lincoln Nautilus, Renault R5, and Honda Passport, later this year.

With Gemini, drivers can do more with simple voice commands. For example, you can tell Gemini to always send messages to a contact in Spanish, ask it to find a nearby taco place, or pull up directions to your kid’s soccer game hidden in an email. Gemini works with Google Maps, YouTube Music, Spotify, and Calendar to offer real-time help without needing to touch the screen.

Another new feature, Gemini Live, lets drivers have a conversation with the assistant. You can brainstorm, get advice, or plan tasks simply by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk.” The idea is to help users stay productive without taking their hands off the wheel.

These Gemini AI features coming to Android Auto just show how far behind Apple is with Siri within CarPlay.

Google is also expanding the app catalog for parked drivers, adding categories like games and video to make downtime more fun. Digital car keys, which let you unlock and start your car with your phone, are expanding to more vehicles including Audi, Volvo, and Polestar.

More details and demos are expected at Google I/O next week.
