PlayStation 5 Console Sales Have Reached 77.8 Million Units, Tracking PlayStation 4

Sony has reported that PlayStation 5 has now reached 77.8 million in lifetime sales. This is according to the company’s FY24 Q4 financials, revealing that despite increased costs and struggles with demands, PlayStation 5 is tracking with PlayStation 4 sales.
Taking a look at the latest report, it’s revealed that PlayStation 5 console sales reached 2.8 million units in Q4. This brought the console’s lifetime sales up to the 77.8 million figure since launching in 2020. PlayStation 5 is already one of the top-selling consoles. Throughout it’s lifetime, PlayStation 5 has been met with increases in prices as well a short supplies throughout its early days.
This has not stopped PlayStation 5 sales from tracking with PlayStation 4. In comparison, by this time in the PlayStation 4 lifecycle (after launching in 2013), the console had sold 500,000 more units than the PlayStation 5 has. That said, it’s still an impressive feat to see Sony continue to be a dominant force within the console market.
It’s also worth pointing out that Sony reports software sales rose to 76.1 million throughout Q4. It’s likely that the company’s first and second-party titles considerably helped. Throughout the fiscal year, Sony helped ship Astro Bot, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
This year, Sony increased the price of the PlayStation 5 for a second time in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand by roughly 10 percent. At the time, the company cited “high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates” as the reason behind the decision. At the time, the US and Canada were both exempt from any major price increase.
However, this may only be temporary. Sony CFO Lin Tao forecasts that the company may take a 100 billion yen (around $953 million CAD) hit due to the US tariffs. In a statement, Tao states, “In terms of the tariffs, we are not just simply calculating the simple tariffs to come up with 100 billion yen, but are thinking about the current available information and looking at the market trend, we may pass the price [to customers] and also shipment allocation.”
Without outright stating PlayStation 5 prices will increase, the looming threat due to tariffs is ever persistent. With games like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach on the way next month, as well as Ghost of Yotei later this year, customers may want to take advantage of the current prices of PlayStation 5.
