Telus Rewards Overhaul Cuts Customer Earn Rates, Say Users [Update]

Telus has revamped its Rewards program, but many customers on forums like RFD are calling it a downgrade, particularly for mobility customers.

Under the old system, users earned 2% back in points on their pre-tax bill. For example, a $100 bill earned 2 points, and 29 points could be redeemed for a $25 gift card or bill credit. That worked out to about a 1.7% return rate.

The new system offers 6, 8, or 10 points per dollar spent, depending on how many services you have. However, redemption rates have jumped: 28,750 points now equals a $25 gift card, which dramatically cuts the value. Depending on your tier, users report the new system gives a return rate of just 0.5% to 0.8%, which is about a 50% cut compared to before.

“Unlock rewards that matter to you”, says the Telus Rewards website. There are now silver, gold, platinum and diamond tiers touting various rewards.

Several Telus customers also noted the loss of the $2 monthly mobility bonus, and some home services, like home phone, no longer count toward tier status, which has dropped some users to the lowest “silver” tier with no rewards points earnings.

The one potential upside discussed: Telus has added perks like global roaming passes, which some say could offset the lower earn rates if used frequently.

The program change coincides with Telus expanding its home services into Eastern Canada, which is why the program wasn’t obvious to everyone. Previously, Telus Rewards had only been available in BC and Alberta.

Update May 14, 2025: A Telus spokesperson told iPhone in Canada the following statement, saying:

We’re launching a new national rewards program that welcomes all TELUS customers into our award-winning loyalty program, including many customers who weren’t previously eligible. The new TELUS Rewards program is the first and only Canadian telecom loyalty program of its kind with redesigned tiers that rewards customers for their loyalty and unlocks exclusive benefits and perks, shifting from a points-only approach to a more comprehensive points-and-perks model.

The program introduces a number of new, high-value perks – including a free Mobile Klinik screen protector service, international roaming passes, video on demand rentals for Optik TV customers, complimentary TELUS Health MyPet virtual consultations, and the opportunity to redeem points for bill credits, gift cards, contest entries and more – bringing more overall value to our customers.

Coming soon, TELUS will welcome WestJet as our inaugural premium partner, introducing exciting travel perks for members and account linking, where members can earn and redeem across TELUS Rewards and WestJet Rewards. This is the first of our strategic partnerships bringing exclusive partner perks and more value to our TELUS Rewards members.
