Telus Blames Rogers as Midweek NHL Games Vanish From Optik TV

Modern home theater with a large wall TV displaying SPORTSNET'HERE FOR HOCKEY', flanked by tall black speakers and dark cabinetry.

Telus Optik TV customers hunting for midweek NHL games are finding empty guide slots this season, and the carrier says the shuffle is not its call. In a Friday message to subscribers, Telus laid out why Monday Night Hockey and Wednesday Night Hockey no longer sit where many British Columbia viewers used to look for them.

According to The Province, the note points at Rogers’ national NHL package for the 2026-2027 season. Monday games now stream only on Sportsnet+, while Wednesday national games live exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, and neither is wrapped into a basic Sportsnet channel subscription on Telus.

What Telus told Optik subscribers

Subscribers who opened the Friday email got a blunt breakdown of the two midweek packages. NHL Monday Night Hockey, Telus said, has moved from Amazon Prime Video to Sportsnet+, is exclusive to that streaming service, and is not included in a Sportsnet channel theme pack. NHL Wednesday Night Hockey has moved the other way, off the Sportsnet theme pack and onto Amazon Prime Video alone.

“The decision, made by Rogers, impacts broadcasting access for the 2026-2027 NHL Hockey season,” Telus wrote, according to The Province. The carrier framed the change as something it did not choose, while still spelling out where fans need to look if they want those national windows.

Rogers Xfinity TV customers who already take Sportsnet get the exclusive Sportsnet+ content, including Monday Night Hockey, bundled into their package at no extra charge. Telus has not matched that include for Optik, so its Sportsnet theme-pack customers still need a separate path for Mondays.

Where Monday and Wednesday games actually live

For the 2026-27 season, Rogers Sports & Media holds the national English rights, and the midweek slots are split across two streaming homes. Monday Night Hockey, which Sportsnet says features more than 50 matchups with Canadian teams, streams only on Sportsnet+. Wednesday Night Hockey, under a long-term sublicence Rogers passed to Prime Video, runs exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Canada in English and French.

Sportsnet+ Standard, which includes those Monday games, lists at $34.99 per month or $269.99 per year. Premium, which adds hundreds of out-of-market NHL games, lists at $44.99 per month or $344.99 per year. Those Sportsnet+ prices took effect ahead of this season after Rogers raised annual rates again.

Viewers who already pay for Sportsnet through a participating TV provider can instead link that account and buy the Sportsnet+ exclusive-content add-on for $12.99 per month. Rogers, Rogers West and Shaw Direct customers with Sportsnet already receive that add-on content at no extra cost. Sportsnet’s own site lists Telus among the providers that can link for the paid add-on, which is the path Optik Sportsnet customers have if Telus does not absorb the fee the way Rogers does.

Wednesday national games do not need Sportsnet+ at all. They are included with an Amazon Prime membership in Canada, currently $9.99 per month or $99 per year, with no extra NHL surcharge on top of Prime. Amazon’s NHL on Prime package covers 27 regular-season Wednesday Night Hockey games this season plus select Stanley Cup Playoff series.

What that means for Canucks fans in B.C.

Canucks viewers still lean on Sportsnet Pacific and related Sportsnet feeds for a large share of regional home and away games, and those local windows are separate from the national Monday and Wednesday packages. The midweek national games that used to feel “on TV” for many Optik households are the ones that moved: Mondays into Sportsnet+, Wednesdays into Prime Video.

Putting both national nights together without a Rogers Xfinity bundle means stacking costs. Sportsnet+ Standard plus Amazon Prime runs about $369 per year before tax if you take the annual plans, or roughly $45 per month if you stay monthly. Keeping a Sportsnet theme pack and adding only the $12.99 Sportsnet+ exclusive add-on for Mondays, then pairing that with Prime for Wednesdays, is cheaper than a full standalone Sportsnet+ sub but still sits on top of the TV bill.

After The Province published, a Sportsnet spokesperson said every cable provider can make the exclusive Sportsnet+ content available as part of its TV offering the same way Rogers does at no additional cost for its customers, and encouraged fans to contact their provider about that option. Telus’ Friday note did not announce any such include for Optik.

Are you adding Sportsnet+, Prime, or both to keep midweek hockey on Telus this season?
