Bell Internet is Down in Ontario and Quebec, Fix Underway [Update]

It’s not a very good Wednesday morning for some Bell customers in Ontario and Quebec, as internet is down.

According to Bell, the company posted just under an hour ago that they are working on a fix. “Some customers in Ontario and Quebec may be experiencing an Internet service interruption. We are working to restore service as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience,” said Bell Support. When reached for additional details, a Bell spokesperson told iPhone in Canada the exact same statement.

Down Detector, a website that lets customers report outages, showed nearly 140,000 reports as of 9:36am EDT. The internet outages look to have affected Virgin Plus internet users as well.

How do you know when the Internet is widespread? Bell is currently the number one trending topic on X right now. Also trending number two is Rogers, with many comparing this significant outage to the infamous Rogers outage that nearly shut down the country a couple of years ago.

Many are saying Rogers cell connections are super slow right now. Even if you ask Rogers if there’s an outage on X, their support team will force you to take the conversation into a direct message, which hides publicly what’s actually happening.

As for Telus customers, they are saying there was a cellular outage earlier this morning as well. “We’re already investigating this situation and we’re waiting for an update from our network support team, thanks for your patience!”, said Telus support on X.

Some Bell customers said their Internet has started to come back online, but that’s not the case for everyone. Is your Bell internet working right now? Let us know where you’re located in the comments.

Update May 21, 12:00pm EDT: Bell Support has reiterated again on X that its internet is down in Ontario and Quebec and still being restored.

Update May 21, 12:19pm EDT: A Bell spokesperson told iPhone in Canada the following statement via email just now:

We would like to apologize for the disruption our customers experienced earlier today due to an internet outage. We can confirm that services have been fully restored as of 11:00am ET. Bell conducted an update that impacted some of our routers. We rolled back the update to quickly restore services. We want to assure our customers and partners that this was a technical issue and we have ruled out a cybersecurity incident as the root cause. Our network teams are conducting a full review to ensure that this situation doesn’t happen again. We apologize for the inconvenience caused and thank customers for their patience.

If your Bell internet is still down, the company says people “should reboot their modem by unplugging it and then plugging it back in after a couple of minutes.”

Why are they allowed to roll out updates during business hours? They should be done at 1am!

It was a joke. I don’t really know how it is done but I would assume that even if the update is scheduled to execute automatically, there should be someone around to make sure things went as planned. Why snarkiness?
