SaskTel Waives Home and Mobile Charges for Wildfire Evacuees

SaskTel is stepping in to support customers affected by wildfires in Northern Saskatchewan by waiving certain fees and service charges.

From May 31 to June 16, 2025, SaskTel will automatically waive all data overage charges for customers living in several impacted communities, including Pelican Narrows, Creighton, Southend, and Weyakwin, among others.

“We want families to stay connected with loved ones during this difficult time,” said Jeremy Harrison, Minister Responsible for SaskTel, in an issued statement. “Customers won’t be charged for internet, TV or home phone services while they’re evacuated.”

In addition to free mobile data, SaskTel will credit residential customers for Internet, maxTV Stream, and Home Phone services while they are away from home due to wildfire evacuations.

The support applies to residents in: Birch Portage First Nation, Brabant Lake, Canoe Lake, Creighton, Denare Beach, Deschambault Lake, East Trout Lake, Jan Lake, Little Bear Lake, Lower Fishing Lake, Morin Lake #217, Pelican Narrows, Piprell Lake, Southend, Sturgeon Weir, Sandy Bay, Weyakwin, and Whelan Bay.

Earlier on May 28, SaskTel noted that wildfires near McLennan Lake damaged their fibre transport infrastructure, causing significant network congestion in communities like Brabant Lake, Sucker Lake, Southend, Key Lake, Cigar Lake, Collins Bay, Wollaston Lake, Black Lake, Stony Rapids, and Fond du Lac. This led to lower-than-usual data services, dropped calls, or discontinued data sessions. SaskTel crews were unable to access the damaged areas for repairs, and customers were encouraged to limit service use to reduce network congestion.

SaskTel said it hopes these measures will offer some relief as affected families deal with ongoing evacuations.
