Rogers Turns on 5G Advanced in Canada—What It Means for You

Rogers is upgrading its wireless network with new technology from Ericsson, becoming the first company in Canada to launch what’s called 5G Advanced.

This upgraded version of 5G is designed to make wireless connections faster, more efficient, and better suited for devices like smartwatches and smart sensors. One big improvement is a feature called RedCap (short for Reduced Capability), which helps smaller devices use less power and stay connected more reliably.

For example, a smartwatch using RedCap technology could last longer on a single charge and stay connected to the network without needing as much bandwidth. The same goes for things like security cameras or health monitoring sensors that don’t need full-speed 5G but still require stable connections.

“5G Advanced will help unlock the full potential of 5G for businesses and consumers,” said Mark Kennedy, Chief Technology Officer, Rogers, earlier this week. “We continue to invest in Canada’s largest 5G network and are proud to be the first in Canada to bring 5G Advanced technology to our customers.”

Ericsson said the upgrade will support better-performing networks for both people and businesses in Canada.

Rogers says it has invested more than $40 billion into its networks over the past 10 years. Its 5G network now reaches over 2,500 communities and is already Canada’s largest wireless network.

Thats Not true Rogers is the largest network in Canada because Telus and Bell share network. Telus owned west canada and Bell owned East Canada.

Sure if you want to get technical but in terms of the actual network that a customer can use Bell and Telus are the largest and have been for like a decade, hence why in many areas Rogers has EXT coverage while Bell/Telus dont simply because there is very few areas where Rogers has coverage that Bell/Telus dont…

So they now actually have a real 5G network instead of the current LTE network that lights up the 5G symbol on your phone.

I will believe it when it is actually real. I finished talking with my mobility technician and was told don’t believe Canada has a 5g network. It shows on phone but there is actually no 5g in Canada yet. Research it.

What it means for me is in October I'll switch to Freedom, pay about half and get the same service. Plus Calls/10GB Roaming a month free instead of $15/day from Rogers.

I can't use my Umidigi anymore because of the VoLTE and I can't even get the 5G versions because I can't confirm if their 5G will work with international unlocked phones anymore. Guess I will have two phones. A Samsung for calls and my Umidigi for gaming
