TikTok Says It Injected $2.3 Billion Into the Canadian Economy: Report

A new report from TikTok Canada says the app helped generate $2.3 billion in GDP for the Canadian economy in 2024, including revenue from small businesses using the platform, content creators, and TikTok’s own operations.

According to the breakdown of the $2.3 billion GDP impact of TikTok in Canada:

• $1.4 billion came from small businesses and creators growing their reach on TikTok
• $602 million was tied directly to TikTok Canada’s internal operations
• $326 million came from businesses featured organically by users on the platform

The company also claims TikTok activity in Canada supported 19,250 full-time jobs. TikTok says its platform helped generate $554 million in Canadian tax revenue in 2024. This figure includes taxes from TikTok’s own Canadian operations, as well as from small businesses, creators, and other companies that benefited from being featured on the app.

TikTok says about 613,000 small businesses in Canada used the app to promote products or services. The report adds that even businesses not directly on TikTok benefit when users mention them in videos. One survey says 84% of these businesses said TikTok was “essential to their business’ survival”.

The 66-page report also shows charts and figures from the impact of TikTok by province and territory, along with numerous case studies showcasing various creators, which of course praise their business success thanks to the short-form video app.

The report prepared by Nordicity, commissioned by TikTok, is part of the latter’s ongoing effort to show its economic role in Canada, amid growing attention from lawmakers and regulators, as owner ByteDance is headquartered in China.
