Rogers Sees Subscriber Growth–But Profit Plunges 62% in Q2

Rogers added tens of thousands of new mobile and internet customers in the second quarter of 2025, but that didn’t stop profits from falling hard.

The telecom giant reported a huge 62% drop in net income, earning just $148 million, compared to $394 million during the same period last year.

On the wireless side, Rogers gained 61,000 mobile phone customers, including 35,000 postpaid subscribers, which are considered more valuable because they’re on contracts. It also added 26,000 new internet users.

Still, the company struggled to make as much money per user. Monthly average revenue per user (ARPU) on mobile dropped to $55.45, down from $57.24 a year ago. Rogers blamed the dip on “ongoing competitive intensity in a slowing market.”

Meanwhile, adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in wireless rose just 1%. Cable revenue and profit were also mostly flat.

“We took meaningful steps to unlock value for shareholders by accelerating the deleveraging of our balance sheet and making our transformational investment in our world-class sports assets,” said CEO Tony Staffieri said in a statement.

That “investment” refers to Rogers becoming 75% owner of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, buying out Bell’s share in a $4.7 billion deal that finalized earlier this month.

Despite the weak profit numbers, Rogers generated $925 million in free cash flow, up 39% from last year.

Rogers is set to remove its 3G network at the end of this month, while also is charging a $75 fee for those still connected to the aging network after the sunset. The company recently also increased its connection fee to $80, up from the $75 that rivals Telus and Bell charge.

Shares of Rogers are trading at $46.65 at the moment, up 0.45% for the day and back up 20.5% over the past month.

Postpaid doesn’t mean they are on a contract btw they could just be signing up for postpaid by bringing their own phone.
