Rogers and Fido Raise Connection Fee Again—Now It’s $80

Rogers and Fido have increased their Setup Service Fee yet again, the second price hike this year.

Back in February, the fee increased from $70 to $75. But as of today, both the Rogers and Fido websites now indicate this fee is now $80, up $5 compared to five months ago.

“Save $80 on the Setup Service Fee when you buy online. Plus, enjoy no shipping fees on select devices with in-store pickup,” says the Rogers website.

Fido’s website has a new ticker as well on the front page that says, “Shop online and save the $80 Setup Service Fee. Plus, enjoy no shipping fees on select devices with in-store pickup.”

The fee is charged when you activate a new phone or line and a human is involved. But the fee is waived if you purchase online.

Telus is charging a $70 connection fee right now, while Bell charges $75. Freedom Mobile charges $45. It’s unclear when rivals will jack up these connection fees to match Rogers. Will we see a $100 connection fee soon in the future?

In other Rogers and Fido news, yesterday some customers with 4G compatible phones saw their devices unexpectedly cut off, requiring customer service help to restore service, in what was related to the 3G network shutdown.

I remember back in early 2017 the connections fees were only $15 with Bell/Virgin and $0 fee with Telus/Koodo.

The government must step in and outlaw these absurd fees. This is absolutely ridiculous. The audacity!

They need to legislate against 'junk fees' like this. Absurd.

The absurdity of this is some services still require a call to activate them like adding a new line for a tablet plan only (without financing a new tablet). The CRTC must regulate those absurd fees. At this point its literally stealing their costumers.
