Microsoft 365 Copilot Rolls Out GPT-5 for Faster, Smarter AI

Microsoft has started integrating OpenAI’s latest generative AI model GPT-5 into its Copilot family, spanning Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Studio, GitHub Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry.

This rollout aso introduces a new “smart mode” that lets Copilot choose automatically between fast responses and deep reasoning depending on the task at hand.

Within Microsoft 365 Copilot, users with an active license can now harness GPT-5’s capabilities to reason over both web content and internal work data, including emails, documents, chats, meetings, and calendars. The new “Try GPT-5” button lets licensed users activate the model, unlocking priority access with smoother performance and more accurate, contextual responses.

Builders leveraging Copilot Studio can now tap GPT-5 to power smarter agents. They can choose GPT-5’s real-time router, which dynamically directs prompts to either a speedy model or a deep-reasoning variant based on complexity. This results in more coherent multi-turn dialogues and sharper task execution across custom workflows.

In the developer ecosystem, GPT-5 is deployed today in GitHub Copilot under public preview for paid plans. It enhances code generation, logic reasoning, and explanation clarity across interfaces like GitHub.com, VS Code, and GitHub Mobile. Developers can also utilize GPT-5 via Azure AI Foundry.

According to Microsoft, GPT-5 offers a uniquely unified architecture. It includes a high-throughput model for instant replies, a deep reasoning variant for complex analysis, and a smart real-time router that navigates between them.

Microsoft says that this move keeps its AI suite firmly at the forefront of workplace innovation, bringing advanced intelligence and secure deployment to both consumers and enterprises. The Red Team rigorously tested GPT-5 for safety, aiming to defend against misuse including malware generation and fraud.
