Spotify Rolls Out Custom Playlist Transitions: How to Enable

Spotify playlist transitions.

Spotify is giving Premium subscribers a new way to shape their playlists, with the option to add transitions between songs. The feature, currently in beta, is designed to help listeners create smoother mixes that flow more like a DJ set.

Users can activate the tool by opening a playlist and tapping the “Mix” button. From there, they can either let Spotify handle the blending automatically or customize it themselves.

The customization options include preset transitions such as fade-ins or rises, along with the ability to fine-tune volume, equalizer settings and effect curves. For those who want more control, Spotify displays beat and key information for each track, allowing songs to be reordered in ways that match tempo and energy.

Spotify says that genres like house or techno, which are naturally built for seamless mixing, work especially well with the feature. But a Spotify spokesperson also frames it as useful for everyday listening—whether building a running playlist with a steady pace or avoiding silences during a road trip. Playlists can be saved, shared with others, or even co-edited by friends who also subscribe to Premium.

In addition to the mixing options, users can create unique artwork for their playlists with stickers and labels, a perk available only for those who experiment with transitions.

The new feature is gradually being introduced to Premium users around the world, with availability depending on app updates.

Custom playlists that can be shared and available publicly is one of the reasons Spotify has a leg up on Apple Music. This is yet another feature that will be handy for those that like to make custom playlists.
