Google has announced updates to its wireless earbuds lineup, introducing new features for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and unveiling the more affordable Pixel Buds 2a. This was announced alongside the new Pixel 10 series smartphones, Pixel 10 Fold and Pixel Watch 4 today.

Pixel Buds Pro 2 Updates

Pixel Buds Pro 2, released last year with the Tensor A1 chip and Gemini AI, are now available in a new Moonstone colour to match the latest Pixel 10 phones. A software update arriving next month will add several new features (this is like Apple updating AirPods Pro 2 with new features via a software update):

  • Adaptive Audio: Automatically adjusts sound levels based on your environment.
  • Loud Noise Protection: Reduces sudden, harmful sounds to protect hearing.
  • Gemini Live improvements: Better performance in noisy spaces, like when a TV is on or people are talking nearby.
  • Gesture controls: Accept calls or dismiss messages by nodding or shaking your head.

The new Moonstone version is available for preorder today at $219 in Canada (save $80), with in-store availability starting August 28.

Pixel Buds 2a: A Cheaper Alternative

The new Pixel Buds 2a join Google’s A-series as a lower-cost option, priced at $179 in Canada. They bring some of the premium features from the Pro line into a lighter, smaller design:

  • Active Noise Cancellation with Silent Seal 1.5, a first for A-series.
  • Battery life: 7 hours on a single charge (with ANC on) and up to 20 hours with the case.
  • Durability: IP54-rated for sweat and water resistance, plus a replaceable case battery.
  • Fit options: Twist-to-adjust stabilizer and four ear tip sizes.
  • Sound and calls: Custom drivers, improved bass, and clearer calls with wind-blocking mesh and AI processing.

The original Pixel Buds A-series debuted back in Canada in the summer of 2021, so this is a big update for these budget earbuds.

Pixel Buds 2a also integrate Gemini, allowing hands-free help for tasks, messages, or recommendations. They support Multipoint pairing, Fast Pair, and Find Hub for tracking misplaced earbuds. They will be available in Iris and Hazel colours, with release set for October 9.
